Behavioural sessions that work...

The term reactive dog is very common. It's used to describe a dog who struggles to cope when certain triggers are present such as other dogs, people, traffic, children, bikes (really anything!) When a trigger appears a dog can stare, try to avoid the trigger, bark, growl, lunge and sometimes snap. These reactions can be worrying and often unpredictable.

If this sounds familiar, then you are in the right place

I offer a tailor made behavioural session package for reactivity which involves three sessions (with the option to book further sessions if you would like more support).

Together we can build your dog's resilience (their ability to cope and feel safer) so they can navigate the often worrying world they have found themselves in, and you can feel more confident and supported along the way.

"Karen is wonderfully patient with our little terrier who is anxious around other dogs. He has come on so well with her help and we will continue with her suggestions. She is available to speak to if we have a problem which is very reassuring."

Every day I guide and support owners to help their dog overcome reactivity issues. In our sessions I create you and your dog a tailor-made plan to follow that fits in with your schedule to set you and your dog up for success.

The internet, social media, friends, family and neighbours often give you conflicting advice leaving you confused and unsure where to start. Let me guide you all the way.

Session Package Goals

My approach has two goals, a plan A and a plan B, because real life isn't perfect!

Goal one - change how your dog feels around their triggers

We want to address the root of your dog's reactive behaviour by changing their emotional response. If your dog feels calmer, safer and more comfortable around their triggers reactive behaviour naturally reduces and in many cases stops.

This goal is achievable
however I have lived with a reactive dog myself and I know that even with the best planning life doesn't always cooperate. You and your dog will sometimes find yourselves in situations that are too much too soon - despite your best efforts to set your dog up for success. This is where goal two comes in.

Goal two - teach a default behaviour your dog can fall back on

We also train your dog a clear, default behaviour that isn't compatible with reactive behaviour. This gives your dog something practical to do when a trigger appears closer or faster that expected. This is your backup plan, a way for your dog to cope when plan A isn't possible at the moment.

Together these goals give you a realistic, supportive training framework -

  • Plan A helps your dog feel better and works to resolve the underlying issue

  • Plan B helps your dog cope when situations are not ideal

This approach leads to achievable, positive results that fit into everyday life, not just controlled training setups.

"I was referred to Karen by my vet after my dog started reacting to cats, both at the window and on walks. I started with a online call and then a home visit. The home visit was especially helpful and reassuring that the way I was doing the training was ok. The advice I was given was excellent and the difference in his reactivity in a few short weeks is amazing. I'm sure with continued training he will improve even more.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Karen."
